Giving Back to the Community
The Blackhawk Chorus Music Education Fund is an outreach program started by the Blackhawk Chorus in memory of longtime chorus member Debbie Frey, who lost her 15-year battle with ovarian cancer in 2011.
Our goal is to raise $20,000 a year so that children in area schools have the same opportunities members of the chorus had to begin their love of singing.
Donations made to the Chorus help to support the Fund.
Significant cuts in school budgets mean funding for music is typically one of the first things to go. Thanks to our support, local students are singing because they now have performance attire.
We have sponsored a workshop that enabled students to work with other choral groups, and to expand their knowledge of different types of music and vocal styles. We have put computers in classrooms, paid for accompanists, bought music, and replaced sound systems, and we're just getting started.
To date, we have raised and given more than $108,000 to local schools, including:
Charlotte Wood Middle School
Diablo Vista Middle School
Dougherty Valley High School
Los Cerros Middle School
Monte Vista High School
San Ramon Valley High School
Tassajara Hills Elementary School
Windemere Ranch Middle School
Blackhawk Chorus is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. For information on donating to the Chorus, or if you are an educator and you want to know how to apply to receive funds, please contact our Chorus Manager.
Debbie Frey was a longtime member of the Blackhawk Chorus family. Her sweet, pure soprano voice earned her plaudits both as a soloist in chorus and with close-harmony vocal group Special Blend.
Throughout her illness, Debbie said that singing made life just a little bit easier.
We are proud to honor her legacy with the Blackhawk Chorus Music Education Fund.
